Meet Serina! + Tuesday Eats + I Have a New Job

Meet our new baby Serina, y’all!

She’s a mantle Great Dane – almost 7 weeks old – and she’s coming home with us tomorrow! I’m one elated mama right now. 🙂

Are you saying “awwww” yet?

Tuesday Eats

Breakfast was pumpkin banana oatmeal with PB – I ate about 3/4 before feeling full. Coffee to drink on the side.

For lunch, I sauteed some Brussels sprouts, venison sausage, bleu cheese, and placed it on spinach with a few cherry tomatoes – I used a drizzle of honey as my dressing, and it was *sooo* good!

My snack was a spinach salad with a sweetie apple and some bleu cheese vinaigrette, S+P. Apples and cheese are one of my favorite combos, and this dressing doesn’t have too many calories, so I’m in LOVE.

Around 5, I needed a pick me up, so I had some broccoli and jalapeno bacon ranch. And around 6, I made spaghetti and ate my portion out of a cat mug. 🙂 Hot tea to follow!

On Working Again

I applied for a job at our local Eddie Bauer, and by really awesome chance, my good friend Daniel who I worked at Hidden Falls Ranch with about 15 years ago is the MANAGER. He called, said he’d love to have me, and I see him tomorrow at 1:30 to go over things. I’m SUPER stoked to be working again, it’s ABOUT TIME!

Things I Found on the Internet that Made Me Laugh

I’ll do an update when we have Serina home …

A Cheese Plate on a Chilly Fall Night

Today we had a high of 57 degrees, a stark contrast to yesterday’s 90 degrees! You know what that means, it’s officially fall weather – we have low temperatures and rain in the forecast now here in the Panhandle!

Luke worked until 12 a.m. and I wanted to do something special for him tonight …. when he finally came home, it was time to PAAAARTAY! Well, party equates to sitting around in our pajamas and underwear, eating and drinking wine.

Finally hubs came home after much anticipation, and it was time to indulge!

I look super tired in this picture, but I had a long day which included some depression and some crying, so there ya go.

I constructed a lovely little cheese plate which consisted of muenster and sharp cheddar cheeses, deer sausage, Club multigrain crackers, black olives, a mix of almonds, cashews, and raisins, broccoli florets, carrot sticks, and two cut up red plums; the dipping sauces were Stubb’s BBQ and light ranch dressing.

And a touch of Pinot Noir, of course. We enjoyed it very much! 🙂

After our late dinner, Luke turned on the Xbox and started playing Destiny 2 with his good friend Marc.

Then out came the Scotch …

… and I promptly when to bed after that! 🙂

XO Mandy

The Problem: Overeating at Night

Raise your hand if you’re prone to overeating at night.

Yep. That’s me. I tend to overeat at night.

Nighttime overeating, by which I mean eating enough to put you in a calorie surplus (eating more than you burn), can absolutely lead to fat gain, and I do not want fat gain. Interestingly enough, I’ve found that the issue isn’t due to a lack of self control. It’s a lack of preparation and pro-activity.

What’s my new goal? It’s not to overeat at night!

My late night overeating is ABSOLUTELY emotionally based.

In this case, it’s important to develop self-awareness. If you’re eating because of stress or anxiety, overeating will make those feelings worse. Figuring out the root cause of your emotional turmoil and replace your negative coping behavior (overeating) with a positive one (exercise, reading, etc.).

I have some good ideas that might help me active this goal:

What situations cause you to struggle the most?
Are there certain days of the week that are most problematic?
If so, what do these days have in common?
What emotions are most prevalent on your most difficult nights?
Are you feeling stressed, anxious, exhausted, overwhelmed? Try to put a name on it.
    What has triggered that feeling?
What kinds of thoughts are you thinking?
Are your thoughts reflective of an outside influence?
How are those thoughts making your struggle better or worse?

When asking myself these questions, I’m looking for the reason behind why I’m turning to food when I’m not hungry. I may not immediately figure it out, so I need to focus on watching and learning from my patterns.

Here’s the truth: for a lot of women, food is a reward. Rewarding yourself for the day being done, working hard, meeting deadlines, cooking dinner, putting kids to bed and finally, finally, finally…the food becomes a way to reward yourself. To actually spend some time on YOU instead of catering to everyone else in your life every minute of the day.

Personally for me, it’s a comfort, soothing my frazzled nerves from a stressful day. It could be relieving loneliness, filling an emptiness or unhappiness inside, or wanting pleasure … that’s a Mandy problem if I’ve ever heard one.

I’m going to try some interesting tips to help control my nighttime overeating ~

  1. Brush my teeth after dinner.
  2. Drink a glass of water before I snack.
  3. Get a good night’s sleep.
  4. Eat a healthy breakfast.
  5. Make sure my meals during the day are satisfying.
  6. Look at the emotional component of food: What do I want the food to do for me?
  7. Make time to transition – People need time to move into the different components in their days. This is how a person begins to switch habits. So maybe your transition is to come home from work every day and instead of jumping into making dinner and cleaning the house, you sit on the couch with a cup of tea for 10 minutes … that’s the transition I’m talking about! I must create a few minutes to transition which allows me to move from work mode to home mode.
  8. If I slip up, I must remember to quickly forgive myself and get back to business. 🙂

Alright, let’s DO THIS!

One Sexy Dress

When your husband exclaims enthusiastically that “YOU’RE SEXY,” you know you’re wearing an AWESOME dress.

I bought the Anthropologie Gitana Tiered Dress by Azulu for $59 … and it was originally in the high $250’s. I fell in love with the girly play on camo, and I wanted to give it a try … and it’s A SCORE. I bought the size 6, and it fits more like a size 4 – PERFECT.

Anthropologie and I have a complicated relationship, y’all. I am a fan of some of their pieces, obvi, and I LOVE the brand Saturday Sunday (plus it’s on the cheaper end of Anthro). I used to wear exclusively Anthropologie, but now with Luke in school, Anthropologie is a TREAT, not a NECESSITY for my wardrobe. I wait for the sale to go on extra sale, and then I strike … that’s what happened with this dress!

I styled the dress with Keds Ace Sneakers … I bought these suckers from Anthro at full price because I needed some sneakers for residential treatment, and these are absolutely comfortable. I am picky about shoes, so buying them online is very hit or miss, but these were happily a HIT.

Side view! (YES, my husband is in the bathtub behind me, HAHA!)

It is SO amazing to feel sexy, powerful, and strong! I’m so thankful for ED recovery … it’s truly fantastic to feel comfortable in my own body. 🙂

A Few Thoughts on Friday

Howdy there my friends! How are you doing today?

The SCOOP right now ~

The Daily Catitude: Calliope passed out on the Xbox looking completely lifeless.

What I’m Currently Saving For: Old Friends Midi Dress from Free People

Anthropologie has just gotten too pricey and too boring for me in general, so I’m slowly making the switch to FP.

I’m also eyeballing this Urban Outfitters Anna Sui top … it would look so cute with my Realisation Par Wild Things skirt.

I am, however, trying to purchase the majority of my clothing at Target and TJ Maxx to save on shipping and to try on the clothes before buying – no expensive returns! These are just a few “fun” items that have caught my eye on the Internet.

What I Last Purchased: Free People Silent D Laguna Mules

Let me start off by saying that I ADORE Silent D shoes – I own two pairs, and they’re the only heels I’ve ever been able to wear comfortably, plus they’re super cute.

These mules are currently ON SALE (and I got them an extra 30% off sale price), on trend, and I look forward to their arrival.

I have a good feeling about those shoes, as I ordered the Anthropologie High Heeled version – the Silent D Noveltee Heels – earlier in the summer, but I had to return them because the heel was about an inch too high for me. They were comfortable but simply not practical for my lifestyle.

What I’m Currently Selling: Check out my auctions on eBay here – they’re all Anthropologie and Free People!

What I’m Eating Today:

A red plum with 2/3 C Greek yogurt and a squirt of honey.

My mug speaks for itself. 🙂

Coffee in my Anthropologie mug from Seattle.

When I was hungry again, I was craving veggies, so I sauteed up a big ol’ handful of kale, some carrots, a big piece of broccoli, about 6 Brussels sprouts, and a small piece of butternut squash, and added a bit of Sesame dressing and minced garlic.

Mmm-uhmm! If eating a big pile of veggies is wrong, I don’t want to be right! SO GOOD! Ein Apfel for snack – an envy apple with two teaspoons of PB and cinnamon.

Around 6, I was getting snacky but wasn’t quuuuuite ready for dinner yet, so I made a little tasting plate of deer sausage, carrots, broccoli, cucumber, and about two tablespoons of light ranch dressing.

Aaaand dinner was what I cooked today – spaghetti on a bed of spinach.

What I’m Cooking Today: Spaghetti

  • 1.5 lb ground chuck
  • Parsley, basil, garlic, and oregano to season the meat
  • 2 24 oz. cans of spaghetti sauce of your choice (I used Classico)
  • 1 packet of McCormick Zesty Spaghetti seasoning
  • 8 oz. chopped mushrooms
  • 1 lb of Barilla Thick Spaghetti noodles
  • 4 oz Philadelphia low fat cream cheese
  • 1 C ricotta cheese
  • 2 C mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 C Parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brown the meat in a large skillet and eyeball seasonings – basil, parsley, oregano, and minced garlic. Add the mushrooms while the beef is about halfway done browning and also add the Zesty taco seasoning. After the meat is browned, add 2 cans of spaghetti sauce and let simmer on medium.

While the meat simmers away, it’s time to boil some noodles! Break the dry noodles in half and add them to boiling water with salt … cook, cook, cook until al dente.

Once the noodles are done, drain them and place them at the bottom of a casserole dish (or two … I made two casseroles out of this!).

Plop the ricotta and cream cheese on the top of the spaghetti – it looks like a lot, but it’s not as much as it seems in this picture! Good lord, that looks like a TON!Then add the meat sauce to the top! Top the casserole(s) with 2 C of mozzarella cheese and 1/2 C of Parmesan. Bake at 350 for 30 minutes.

Voila! I made two casseroles, FYI – I’m just showing pictures of one. 😀

Til Soon,

Welcome to Martaus Modus

Hello and welcome! My name is Mandy Martaus, and I’m an enthusiastic amateur with a camera, a foodie, a fashionista on a budget, and Mother of Kitty Cats … this blog is slowly going to transition from The Mood Eater, a blog focused on ED recovery, to a lifestyle blog where my friends and family can keep up with me.(Yes, I realize that I look a little insane and wrinkly here – that’s what I get for not doing much makeup at the ranch, but hey, I look enthusiastic, and that’s how I feel about starting this blog.)

My dear husband Luke and I live in a little apartment here in the Texas Panhandle while he finishes up school (he’s a Biology major with plans to become a Physician’s Assistant). Luke is an avid gun collector and talented shooter – we often practice together at the family ranch in Canadian, TX.

Luke and I are also *really* into fitness, particularly weightlifting, and I love cooking healthy meals for us. 🙂

We have three babies aka kitties named Persephone, Calliope, and Caprica, and we also own a cinnamon calico ball python named Drogo.

What I’m Cooking Tonight: Mandy’s Version of Cheesy One Skillet Taco Pasta

  • 1 lb ground beef ( I used ground chuck)
  • about 2 C broccoli florets
  • about 1 C of fresh Hatch chilies (or 2 cans of chilies if you don’t have access to fresh Hatch ones)
  • 6 C fresh spinach
  • 16 oz rigatoni pasta
  • 6 C water
  • 1 packet of Cheesy Taco Seasoning
  • 3 C jarred salsa
  • about 3 C shredded cheese of your choice – I used a fiesta blend

  • In a large skillet, cook the beef, broccoli, and spinach until combined and tender, and the beef is done.
  • Add pasta, water, salsa, and taco seasoning to the mix and stir.
  • Bring to a boil … cover and reduce heat to a simmer and cook for 15-20 minutes, or until the pasta is tender.
  • Time to add the cheese! Stir to melt.
  • Add your favorite toppings such as avocado, sour cream, tomatoes, tortilla chips, salsa, etc.
  • Enjoy! 🙂 It serves 6-8.

That’s what I’ve got for tonight, but I hope to post on a daily basis, or at least every couple of days.  😀
